Nationally renowned organist Judith Hancock will perform as part of the Chapel Artist Series on Sunday, Feb. 24 at 3 p.m. in St. Joseph Memorial Chapel at the College of the Holy Cross. The concert will be dedicated to the memory of Hancock’s late husband, Dr. Gerre Hancock, and will consist of works by Duruflé, Guilain, Mendelssohn, Respighi and Dupré. The performance is free, open to the public and handicap accessible.
Hancock is the senior lecturer in organ and sacred music at the University of Texas, Austin, and she has played many recitals throughout the United States, including appearances at the conventions of The American Guild of Organists. Formerly the associate organist of St. Thomas Church Fifth Avenue in New York and director of music at St. James’ Church Madison Avenue, N.Y., Hancock is a graduate of Syracuse University and the Union Theological Seminary in New York City. In 2004, St. Dunstan’s College of Sacred Music of Providence, R.I awarded her the honorary degree of doctor of sacred music.
Dr. Gerre Hancock, who is one of the most acclaimed concert organists and choral directors, passed away last year. The husband of Judith Hancock for 50 years, he taught alongside Judith Hancock at the University of Texas, Austin where together they built a program of studies in organ and the practice of sacred music.
