Title:  Weapons of Math Destruction

Abstract:  In this year’s Leonard C. Sulski Memorial Lecture in Mathematics, data scientist, mathematician, and author Cathy O'Neil will outline the kinds of problems we face with powerful, opaque, and unfair algorithms being deployed against workers, consumers, and citizens. She will talk about how our blind trust in math and technology allows private companies to take advantage of us as individuals and as a society, propagating inequality and negative feedback loops. Finally, she will discuss, hopefully with the audience, how to fight back. This lecture will be accessible to a general audience.

Cathy O'Neil is the author of the book Weapons of Math Destruction: how big data increases inequality and threatens democracy, released in September 2016. She is also the CEO of ORCAA, an algorithmic auditing company that she recently founded.
