The present political divisions in our society reflect two deep, almost metaphysical intuitions, one that favors openness and flux, and the other that leans toward solidity and permanence. It is the latter that is becoming more powerful, and Christians need to carefully discern what forms of permanence and solidity are fitting and proper for a healthy society. Is there a politics of permanence, limits, and "borders" that Christians should endorse?
